Samsung SDI, the battery-making affiliate of Samsung, said Wednesday that it has developed an advanced battery to be used in electric bikes, at a major technology expo in Germany.

In a statement, SDI said it developed a large battery pack that allows the bikes to run for to 100 kilometers on one charge. The product was exhibited at this year's Eurobike expo in the German city of Friedrichshafen.

Seo Hae-su, a spokesman at SDI, said the exhibition of its latest battery with such as technology is part of its strategy to expand its presence in the so-called e-bike market, which it believes is a key growth area given the growing appetite of consumers to use alternative forms of transportation.

"The main means of transportation will change the focus on e-bikes or rail cars as consumers have a preference to use them when they make short trips," said Seo, adding the demand for e-bikes in Europe and China remains solid. "The electric bicycle has become a perfect substitute for eco-friendly transportation."

The statement also highlighted that it aims to gain a lot of traction with its new Bluetooth-based technology helping users check the battery status while riding on bicycles, with their smartphones.

Aside from the efficient energy storage capacity, the 500 watt-hours battery pack comes in a slim size with the company's state-of-the-art pack-making technology.

Samsung SDI secured the No. 1 position in the global lithium-ion battery market for electric bicycles for two consecutive years since 2013, according to Japan-based market researcher B3.

The market research institution said SDI is expected to maintain the leading position with 25 percent of market share this year.

More than 1,300 bicycle part manufacturing companies participated for the annual bike exhibition. Samsung SDI has been introducing its key technologies and products for the event for four years, since 2012.
